Japanese researchers develop a 42GB super DVD

A research team from the Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials of prestigious Tohoku University in Northern Japan announced [JP, PDF] it has found a way to multiply the amount of data that can be stored on a DVD or CD by 9.

It is claimed the result was achieved by shaping the pits on a DVD’s surface, which are usually flat, like “V”s. The researchers say a V-shaped pit can hold as much data as 2^9 flat pits, making the development of 42GB DVDs possible.

This fascinating technology has two main drawbacks. Firstly, the new super discs cannot be used in existing CD/DVD drives. It is secondly impossible to apply the new technology to Blu-ray discs.

Aucune idée de ce que ça signifie, mais moi ça m'a plu.

Woman Who Died While Watching TV Sat Unfound for 42 Years

Hedviga Golik made herself a cup of tea and sat down to watch some television in her home town of Zagreb, Croatia. Sadly, she died in her chair. This was in 1966. She was just found, 42 years later, in her time capsule mausoleum where she's been sitting ever since. She never finished her tea.

What's absurd is that she was in fact reported missing, but somehow no one ever checked her apartment, which leads me to believe no one checked anywhere. I mean, where else do you look for someone when they're missing? I don't understand it. Her neighbors apparently just assumed she moved out of her apartment, and she was finally found when the police broke in to figure out who owned the place.

A police spokesman said: "When officers went there, they said it was like stepping into a place frozen in time. The cup she had been drinking tea from was still on a table next to the chair she had been sitting in and the house was full of things no one had seen for decades. Nothing had been disturbed for decades, even though there were more than a few cobwebs in there."

Trio of Super-Earths Discovered : A group of astronomers have now discovered a system of three super-Earths around a rather normal star, which is slightly less massive than our Sun, and is located 42 light-years away towards the southern Doradus and Pictor constellations.
